Sentence Structure - How to Ask/Write Questions in German Languge (2)

 

As part of Sentence Structure, i have written a blog on  Main and Subordinate Clause.


This is in Continuation to that, W-Frage or W- Question- How to ask Questions in German Language

This is mainly emphasised on how to ask Question and what is the structure to be followed.


Questions in German Language are framed using Question words  such as

  • Woher
  • Was
  • Wo
  • Wer
  • Wem
  • Wen
  • Wesen
  • Welche
  • Wie
We normally use W- Questions to get to know about someone or something 

Wer  : 
                This  refers to WHO in English

                 If Question is formed with "Wer" it means we are referring to a  Person while replying
                 We are asking about a Person or Subject of the Sentence

                Conjugated Verb is in  Second Position

                This is always refers to  NOMINATIVE CASE 
               
Examples :    "Wer sind sie"  ?          -- Who are you 

                        Ich bin Karl                    I am Karl




         Was   :

                This refers to  WHAT in English

               If you ask a question with " Was", this means we are referring to an Object or thing  or an   Action.   We are asking about a Thing or Subject/Object  of a Sentence. 

             Conjugate Verb is in Second Position

                This refers to NOMINATIVE  & AKKUSATIVE 

Examples:    Was machen sie  ?                 -  " What are you doing"

                     Ich Spiele Schach              -      " I am Playing Chess or I play Chess
       


Wen   :
                     This refers to  WHOM /WHO in English

                     If you ask a question with " Wen". this means we are asking about the Object of a sentence.  This Object refers to Accusative Object or Direct Object of Sentence.

                  Conjugated Verb is in Second Position

                    This refers to AKKUSATIVE CASE.

Examples:   Wen rufen Sie an ?               - Whom do you call ?

                   Ich rufe  Jens  an,                          I call to Jens.

                     
                   


Wem  :

              This refers to   " WHOM"  in English  .

            If you a question with "Wem", this means we are asking about an Indirect Object of a Sentence.

            This Objects are Dative Objects

              This refers to DATIVE CASE


Examples;  Wem Schreiben Sie einen Brief  ?                To whom did you write a Letter

                   Ich Schreibe meiner Tante einen Brief         I write a letter to my Aunty





     Wessen  :

                       This refers to " WHOSE/ WHOM" in English

                 If a question starts with  Wessen " this means you are asking about a Possession or ownership of a Object

                   We use Wesen for Genitive Objects

                  This Refers to Genitive Case


Example :        Wessen  Buch ist  das ?       - Whose Auto is it?

                       Das ist mein Buch                    That is my Book




             Wo :  

                  This refers  to " Place" in English

                       If a question starts with  Wo"- this means you are asking about a position or Place of Subject

Examples :    Wo  sind  Sie?                           Where are you?

                     Ich bin ins Buro                          I am in Office.



          Woher :

                      This refers to a  "From Where" in English

Examples :      Woher kommen Sie ?                          Where do you come from ?

                       Ich komme aus deutschland                  I am from Germany   .



Wohin :

                This refers to " To where" in English

Exampless :   Wohin gehen Sie                       Where are you going to

                      Ich gehe nach USA                    I am going to USA 

                      

     

Wann :

             This refers to "WHEN" in English

Examples:  wann ist deine Prüfung           ---      When is your Exam

                   Meine Prüfung ist am Montag           My Exam is on Monday



Warum :

           This refers to " Why" in Egnlish

Examples:    Warum spielt das Kind nicht? - Why is the child not playing 

                    Das Kind ist Krank                         The Child is Ill



Wie:

                   This refers to "HOW" in English


Examples      Wie geht es dir ?                       How is it going with you

                      Ich bin gut                                I am doing good

              


Welche (r ,e,s)

                     This refers to "WHICH" In English

Examples:   Welches Buch liest du                             which book are you reading

                    Ich lese ein Krimi                                      I am reading a Thriller
